BY-LAW 9

 

ELECTION OF OFFICERS OF THE COMPONENT AND OF LOCALS

 

Section (1)

All elections shall be by secret ballot and decided by a simple majority.

 

Section (2)

(a)  All nominees for National Executive office must be voting delegates to the National Convention and be in attendance at the time of election or have indicated in writing their willingness to accept the position if elected;

 

(b)  all nominees for National Directors shall be as described in By-Law 6, Section (3).

 

Section (3)

In the event of more than two candidates for office, the candidate receiving the fewest number of votes shall be dropped from the ballot whenever a clear majority of the votes cast is not accorded any candidate.  This procedure shall continue on each succeeding ballot for the position until a candidate receives the necessary majority.

 

Section (4)

Election of officers of Locals shall take place at annual membership meetings of the Local.

 

Section (5)

A nomination committee should be appointed in the Local concerned, and the Chairperson of such committee may appoint such assistant as necessary to ensure an orderly election.

 

Section (6)

All officers of this Component and its Locals, shall take office at the end of the meeting or Convention at which they are elected.  When the incumbent of a full-time office is changed, the National Council shall make provision for continuation of services.

 

Section (7)

The Oath of Office shall be administered to all officers immediately before taking office.

 

Section (8)

The election of the National President, the First National Vice-President, the Second National Vice-President shall proceed in that order and the election of the National Directors shall proceed in accordance with By-Law 6, Section (3).

 

Section (9)

As the election for each office is called, the nominee, nominator or seconder of each nominee whether filed previously with the Nominations Committee or nominated from the floor, may speak to the National Convention for not more than three (3) minutes on behalf of the nominee.

 

Section (10)

The National President and First National Vice-President shall not be eligible for election to Local or Area Council office.

 

Section (11)

Shop Stewards shall be elected for an indeterminate period.

 

Section (12)

At any time, 50% plus one of the members represented by a Shop Steward may revoke the mandate of the Shop Steward and elect a replacement in accordance with these By-Laws.
